4 Ways to Stop Your Ring from Spinning

As annoying as it may be, there is no such thing as the perfect ring size.

The weather, what we eat, and normal hormonal fluctuations all impact the size of our finger each day. 
That doesn’t even take into account the fact that for many people, the base of their finger is smaller than the knuckle. That means rings can spin once they’re on.

The good news is that there are some tricks to make your rings spin less!

A Tight Fit

The easiest way to cut down on the amount your ring spins is sizing it.

The tighter the ring fits over your knuckle, the less it will spin once it’s on the other side.

Rings with larger stones are more prone to spinning in general, since gravity is always trying to grab that stone and bring it down to the base of your finger.

Stabilizing Beads

Just making the ring smaller isn’t enough to stop spinning for some people, especially those with larger knuckles. This can be especially problematic for anyone with arthritis.

One option is the installation of stabilizing beads on the base of the ring.

These little pieces of metal can counteract the force of gravity, cutting down on the spin. The beads can always be shaved out in the future, if you no longer need them.

Speed Bump

In other cases one larger stabilizing bead may be installed on the inside of the ring. We call this the “speed bump.”

Our Goldsmiths will typically recommend which is better—beads or a bump—depending on the construction of your ring.

Ring Guard

In some cases your ring fits great most of the time, but on a really cold day, or when your finger contracts, you may need a little help to make it fit better.

A temporary ring guard—a piece of small metal or plastic —may be ideal.

The installation is done while you wait in our showroom, and it’s generally less than $20.

These are also super if you receive a new engagement ring and it doesn’t quite fit. You can wear one of these while you show off your rings, or take photos, then have the ring properly sized when you can part with it for a longer period of time.
