HJ Explores Antwerp: Diamond Capital of the World

Antwerp, Belgium isn't just a charming European city of cobblestone streets and medieval architecture – it's the beating heart of the global diamond trade. Recently, our team at Hingham Jewelers had the extraordinary privilege of traveling to Antwerp to gain an insider's view of how the world's most precious stones are sourced, screened, and perfected.

Our journey took us behind the scenes into one of the most secure and exclusive areas of the diamond world: Belgium's Diamond Office. This is where the vast majority of the world's rough diamond supply first arrives to be meticulously screened for customs and, increasingly, for compliance with new international sanctions.

Starting in January, all diamonds entering the United States and other G7 nations must be fully traceable back to their country of origin. This new mandate is part of a global effort to enforce sanctions on Russian diamonds. As a result, Antwerp's role has become even more critical. Every shipment is carefully examined to ensure that no Russian-origin diamonds make it into the G7 supply chain. Our visit gave us rare insight into the rigorous verification processes being used to ensure transparency and ethical sourcing.

But our exploration didn't stop at compliance and customs. We also had the unique opportunity to visit Antwerp's cutting and polishing workshops, where the true artistry of the diamond trade comes to life. Watching skilled craftsmen transform rough stones into dazzling finished gems was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Each facet, each polish, is a testament to generations of expertise and precision.
