What to do if Water Gets into your Watch

What to do if Water Gets into your Watch

It’s a common misconception that watches are “water proof.”

In reality, under certain circumstances, every watch is at risk of water damage.

Here’s what you need to know about protecting your watch from water damage, and what to do if water is already inside.

Is my watch water proof?

No watch is totally water proof. Any time the crown, which is the part of the watch used to set the time, is released, the watch is exposed. It’s very easy for water or moisture to get inside the watch if the crown is released, which can cause damage to the delicate parts inside.

Once the crown is pushed or screwed in, many watches do offer varying levels of water resistance. That is usually marked on the case back, or on the dial.

For example, a watch that is water resistant to 50 meters is suitable for things like splashing during hand washing, or being caught in the rain.

A timepiece that is water resistant to 100 meters is suitable for swimming.

Any watch with a water resistance of 200+ meters is made for diving.

These numbers are calculated based on the pressure to which a watch can be exposed while under water, but are only valid if the crown and other mechanisms are fully pushed in and screwed down tightly.

Can I shower with my watch?

Showering with any timepiece is never advised. Not only is the watch exposed to high humidity, but it is also exposed to soaps and shampoos that can be corrosive over time.

Can I wear my leather strap in the water?

Leather straps should never be worn in the water. Exposure to moisture, or oily products, can quickly cause the leather strap to deteriorate, requiring a replacement.

What do I do if there is water in my watch?

If you notice moisture or water inside your watch, immediately release the crown and place the watch under a lamp. This will work to gradually release moisture and move it away from the most delicate components inside the watch. Then, as soon as possible, bring the watch to our store.

If water is left inside a watch for too long, components can rust or become seriously damaged.

Hingham Jewelers has a team of specialists ready to assist you with your watch repair needs, be it a simple battery replacement or a more complicated service for a Rolex or Omega timepiece.
