Grandmother's Diamond Used to Create Wedding Necklace

“She said yes to the dress!”

It’s a phrase widely understood—the importance of selecting the perfect dress for a woman’s wedding day. But selecting the jewelry to accompany that dress is equally as important.

The jewels must complement the outfit, and make a statement. In many cases, it’s also the perfect opportunity to wear jewelry that has special sentimental significance.

This past spring, a client decided she wanted to create a custom piece of wedding jewelry for her daughter.

She came to us with her mother’s original engagement diamond. It had been reset into a rose gold pendant and given to her after mother passed away.

For years she wore her Mom’s diamond around her neck, but now, for her daughter’s wedding, she wanted to pass the diamond to her.

Her daughter loves sunflowers, so the client requested that we somehow incorporate the flower into the design. The client explained that her daughter’s wedding dress featured an open back, so she also wanted some sort of design element on the back of the necklace to work with the lines of the dress.

Our design specialists crafted a long necklace that was stunning.

On the front of the necklace, we set the grandmother’s diamond in a sunflower setting. On the back sits another sunflower crafted from gold, with a charm dangling off of it to complement the open back dressed.

The client was overwhelmed with emotion. When she presented the necklace to her daughter, at the rehearsal dinner, she prepared a “story of the stone.”

From the stone’s point of view, she described the journey it has taken, starting when her father selected the stone at a jewelry store in the 1930s. The stone then tells of the unconditional love the couple shared as their family grew, eventually being reset and passed down to one of their daughters.

The stone ends its story by saying it’s excited to start a new adventure with the granddaughter, vowing to “bring the unconditional love” that her grandfather saw in it almost a century ago. “I am a very happy stone.”
