Lab-Grown vs.
Natural Diamonds
At Hingham Jewelers, we believe the right choice is an informed one. Here is everything you need to know before you decide.
Book a ConsultationNatural Diamonds
Formed by the Earth
Natural diamonds form deep within the earth over millions of years, under extraordinary pressure and heat. No two are identical. Their origin is geological, their rarity genuine, and their journey to your hand is one measured in deep time rather than days.
Lab-Grown Diamonds
Created by Science
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, produced in a controlled environment over a matter of weeks. Scientists replicate the same conditions that create diamonds underground, resulting in a stone with virtually identical chemical and optical properties to a natural diamond.
Identification
Can You Tell the Difference?
Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and optically virtually the same as natural diamonds. They are graded on the same 4Cs scale: cut, color, clarity, and carat. They are not simulants or imitations.
Under magnification, many lab-grown diamonds carry a laser inscription reading "LG" to indicate their laboratory origin. Without that inscription, rigorous gemological testing is required to determine a stone's source.
The Gemological Institute of America, the foremost authority on diamond grading and certification, tests and certifies both natural and lab-grown stones. Any GIA grading report will clearly state whether a stone is natural or laboratory grown. We recommend asking for a grading report with any significant diamond purchase.

Schedule a ConsultationFrequently Asked Questions
Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same chemical composition, the same hardness, and the same optical properties as a natural diamond. What differs is its origin, not its identity as a diamond.
Is cubic zirconia the same as a lab-grown diamond?
No. This is one of the most common misconceptions we hear. Cubic zirconia is a diamond simulant with an entirely different chemical makeup. Lab-grown diamonds, by contrast, are chemically identical to natural diamonds. They are not the same category of stone.
Will a lab-grown diamond hold its value?
Lab-grown diamonds have seen significant price decreases as production technology has improved and supply has increased. They are unlikely to hold or appreciate in value the way natural diamonds historically have. If resale value is important to you, this is an important factor to weigh.
How do I know which is right for me?
There is no universal right answer. The best choice is the one you make with full information. We recommend sitting down with one of our specialists, asking every question you have, and taking the time you need. We carry both and can show you options across the full spectrum so you can see the difference for yourself.
Does Hingham Jewelers sell both?
We do. We stock natural and lab-grown diamonds and are happy to walk you through options in both categories. Our job is to educate, not to sell you something. When you leave our store, we want you to feel completely confident in your decision.
