Your Diamond Education

Lab-Grown vs.
Natural Diamonds

At Hingham Jewelers, we believe the right choice is an informed one. Here is everything you need to know before you decide.

Natural Diamonds

Formed by the Earth

Natural diamonds form deep within the earth over millions of years, under extraordinary pressure and heat. No two are identical. Their origin is geological, their rarity genuine, and their journey to your hand is one measured in deep time rather than days.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Created by Science

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, produced in a controlled environment over a matter of weeks. Scientists replicate the same conditions that create diamonds underground, resulting in a stone with virtually identical chemical and optical properties to a natural diamond.

Identification

Can You Tell the Difference?

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and optically virtually the same as natural diamonds. They are graded on the same 4Cs scale: cut, color, clarity, and carat. They are not simulants or imitations.

Under magnification, many lab-grown diamonds carry a laser inscription reading "LG" to indicate their laboratory origin. Without that inscription, rigorous gemological testing is required to determine a stone's source.

The Gemological Institute of America, the foremost authority on diamond grading and certification, tests and certifies both natural and lab-grown stones. Any GIA grading report will clearly state whether a stone is natural or laboratory grown. We recommend asking for a grading report with any significant diamond purchase.

Weighing Your Options

What Each Choice Offers

Lab-Grown

The Case For Lab-Grown

Lower Cost Per Carat Because lab-grown diamonds are produced at scale in weeks rather than mined over years, they typically cost significantly less than natural diamonds of comparable size and quality. That difference can mean a larger stone, a better grade, or more budget for the setting.
Identical Physical Properties Lab-grown diamonds are chemically and optically the same as natural diamonds. They are graded on the same 4Cs scale: cut, color, clarity, and carat. They are not simulants or imitations.
A Sustainability Consideration Some buyers feel that choosing a lab-grown diamond aligns with their environmental values, avoiding the land disruption associated with traditional mining. This is a personal consideration worth exploring.
Things to Consider

What to Know Before You Decide

Declining Resale Value As lab-grown diamond production scales rapidly, prices have dropped considerably. Unlike natural diamonds, which hold value over time, lab-grown stones are unlikely to appreciate. Think of it like consumer electronics: the price tends to go down as the technology matures.
The Sentimental Dimension Some couples find meaning in the natural origin of a diamond. The idea that their stone formed over billions of years, in the earth, long before either of them existed, carries a weight that science cannot replicate. That is not a small thing.
Disclosure and Transparency Any reputable jeweler, including Hingham Jewelers, will always disclose whether a diamond is natural or lab-grown. If you are ever unsure, ask. You deserve to know exactly what you are purchasing.
We Are Here to Help

The Right Diamond Is the One That Feels Right to You

Our team at Hingham Jewelers has guided South Shore families through this decision for generations. We carry both natural and lab-grown diamonds and will never steer you toward one or the other. We will simply help you understand your options and find the stone that fits your story.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the same chemical composition, the same hardness, and the same optical properties as a natural diamond. What differs is its origin, not its identity as a diamond.

Is cubic zirconia the same as a lab-grown diamond?

No. This is one of the most common misconceptions we hear. Cubic zirconia is a diamond simulant with an entirely different chemical makeup. Lab-grown diamonds, by contrast, are chemically identical to natural diamonds. They are not the same category of stone.

Will a lab-grown diamond hold its value?

Lab-grown diamonds have seen significant price decreases as production technology has improved and supply has increased. They are unlikely to hold or appreciate in value the way natural diamonds historically have. If resale value is important to you, this is an important factor to weigh.

How do I know which is right for me?

There is no universal right answer. The best choice is the one you make with full information. We recommend sitting down with one of our specialists, asking every question you have, and taking the time you need. We carry both and can show you options across the full spectrum so you can see the difference for yourself.

Does Hingham Jewelers sell both?

We do. We stock natural and lab-grown diamonds and are happy to walk you through options in both categories. Our job is to educate, not to sell you something. When you leave our store, we want you to feel completely confident in your decision.
