Many people wear their favorite pieces of jewelry every single day, sometimes even while engaging in high impact activities like exercising.
Jewelry is meant to be worn and enjoyed, but doing so results in unavoidable wear and tear. The key is understanding that, and acting before a major problem develops.
Here are 4 warning signs that your favorite piece of jewelry might be ready to break:
Catching Prongs
Is your ring catching, or pulling on your clothing? This could be a sign of prong damage.
Prongs are the small pieces of metal that hold your stones in place. It’s very easy to damage a prong without knowing it, particularly rings. We don’t fully appreciate how often we’re hitting our hands, and as a result, our rings, on various objects during the day. Once your prong breaks, it leaves your stone at risk of falling out.
As soon as you notice a prong catching, stop by our store. We offer complimentary jewelry inspection each day, so we’ll look at your jewelry under the microscope to diagnose any potential issues. From there, our team of Goldsmiths can repair your jewelry, hopefully before you lose a stone.
Loose Clasps and Backs
Clasps and earring backs loosen over time. Each time you put on, or take off a necklace, bracelet, or earring the backing becomes a bit less secure. That’s normal.
If you notice that your bracelet, necklace, or earring is not clasping tightly, stop by our store. Our repair team can tighten clasps and backs, giving you added peace of mind that you won’t lose a piece you love.
Stretched Strands
Over time, strands of beads or pearls will stretch. When that happens, you’re at risk of more easily breaking that piece of jewelry.
If you notice a bracelet or necklace sagging a bit, or fitting more loosely, stop by Hingham Jewelers. We can restring your item so it is back in tip-top shape.
Moisture Inside Watch
Can you see a little moisture inside your watch? That’s a bad sign. It means water has somehow entered the timepiece, and could be rusting the mechanisms that make the watch tick.
At the first sign of moisture, bring the watch to our store. Our trained watch technicians will open the watch and assess the situation, hopefully rectifying it before it’s too late.
Hingham Jewelers is proud to offer a wide variety of jewelry and watch repair services. Much of the work is done in-house, right in our store.
We also offer an Appraisal service, if you need to insure your items. In some cases, if an insured piece of jewelry is badly damaged, the repair costs will be covered by your insurance company.
