It’s very common to need rings sized.
Engagement rings often need adjustment, after being presented, since the initial figure size is typically a best estimate.
Ring sizing is also common after things like weight gain or loss, a change in medication or diet, or the onset of arthritis.
At Hingham Jewelers, we have a team of Goldsmiths ready to size your ring, be it silver, gold, or platinum.
Here are some common questions we receive regarding ring sizing.
How do I know if a ring fits well?
If a ring goes on to your finger easily, but requires a bit of a pull to come off, it’s most likely a good fit. If the ring is able to wiggle around on your finger, it is most likely too large.
It’s important to remember that there is no such thing as a “perfect” ring size. Each ring is going to fit a bit different, depending on the ring’s width, and how top heavy it may be because of diamonds or other gemstones involved in the design.
On top of that, our hands change about a half size a day due to the time of day, weather, physical activity, and diet.
How do you size a ring?
The bottom of the ring, known as the shank, is cut, and metal is either removed or added to adjust the size as needed. The metal is then soldered back together.
In some cases, plain bands can be stretched up or down a size.
Once the sizing is complete, the ring is cleaned and inspected. If needed, gems are tightened.
How long will it take to size my ring?
It typically takes 1-2 weeks to properly size your ring. This provides our Goldsmiths with the appropriate time to not just size the ring, but also clean, polish, and inspect the ring for any other required work like stone tightening.
