At Hingham Jewelers, custom design is often about more than creating something new—it’s about connecting generations, honoring history, and bringing new life to pieces that deserve to be worn and loved again. This recent project was a beautiful reflection of all three.
Our client came to us with a collection of jewelry: a ring jacket set with a mix of diamond shapes—trillion, baguette, and rounds—as well as several ruby pieces she had received as gifts over the years. They simply didn’t suit her personal style, and she found herself not wearing them.

From the start, her vision was clear. She wanted to transform these pieces into a bold, wide yellow gold ring—something substantial, modern, and entirely her own—while still incorporating the diamonds she already had. She was also open to adding one additional diamond to complete the design, which we did.
What made this project especially meaningful was the history behind it. Decades earlier, her grandmother had purchased a ring from Hingham Jewelers in the early 1950s, working with Michael’s grandfather. Now, years later, that same family connection came full circle as Michael helped guide her through her own custom design journey.
We began by carefully removing and evaluating the stones from her existing pieces, studying how the different shapes could work together in a cohesive layout. The mix of trillion, baguette, and round diamonds offered a unique design opportunity—but also required thoughtful planning to ensure balance and flow within a wide band.
From there, we created several design concepts, exploring different arrangements and proportions. Once a direction was chosen, we brought the design to life with a true-to-size wax model. This step allowed our client to see and feel the scale of the ring, ensuring the width, stone placement, and overall presence were exactly right before moving into production.

To anchor the design and give it a strong focal point, we added one natural diamond at the center—complementing the existing stones and tying the entire composition together.
The final result was a stunning wide yellow gold ring that felt both bold and refined. The variety of diamond shapes, once scattered across different pieces, now worked in harmony within a single, cohesive design. And most importantly, it was a piece she instantly connected with—something she loved and was excited to wear regularly!
