Yes. Consultations at Hingham Jewelers are always complimentary, with no obligation to move forward.

An initial consultation allows us to learn about your ideas, examine any existing jewelry or gemstones, discuss design possibilities, and provide an initial estimate.

How much does custom jewelry cost?
Custom jewelry can range from a few hundred dollars to many thousands of dollars, depending on the scope of the project.

The final cost may be influenced by:

-The type and amount of metal used
-The size, quality, and number of gemstones
-The complexity of the design
-Whether existing jewelry or gemstones are being reused
-The amount of handwork and finishing required

As a general guide, a custom ring often begins around $1,000 to $2,000, with the price increasing based on the design, gemstones, metal weight, and level of detail.

How long does a custom jewelry project take?
Most custom projects, including custom engagement rings, take approximately four to six weeks once production begins.

That timeframe does not include the initial consultation and design process. Depending on the complexity of the project, the design phase may take several days or a few weeks. We work with you through the design process until the direction is fully established.

Simple projects may be completed more quickly, while highly detailed or technically complex pieces may require additional time.

Can I use my own diamond, gemstones, or gold?
Yes. We regularly incorporate clients’ own diamonds, gemstones, and gold into new custom jewelry.

Existing materials may be:

-Reset into a new mounting
-Combined with other family jewelry
-Incorporated into a completely new design
-Used as a trade toward the project

Our design and goldsmith teams will evaluate the condition, quality, and suitability of each piece before recommending how it can be used.

How do you determine whether an old piece can be reused?
We assess the condition and quality of the jewelry and gemstones as part of the consultation and estimate process.

For gemstones, we consider factors such as:

-Chips, fractures, or other damage
-Overall condition and durability
-Whether the stone is suitable for its intended setting
-The cost and risk of removing and resetting it

For old gold, we consider its type, condition, weight, and whether it can provide enough material for the new design. In some cases, additional new gold may be needed to provide the strength and durability the finished piece requires.

Can you redesign my grandmother’s ring?
Yes. Redesigning family jewelry is one of the most meaningful types of custom work we do.

We can often reset the original diamonds or gemstones into a new mounting while preserving the history and sentimental value of the piece. A family ring can become a new engagement ring, anniversary ring, pendant, or another design that is better suited to your style and lifestyle.

Can old gold be used in a new ring?
Often, yes. However, old gold may need to be supplemented with new gold depending on the design.

The strength and durability of the finished piece are our first priorities. We will explain how much of the original metal can reasonably be used and whether additional material is recommended.

Can 14-karat and 18-karat gold be melted together and reused?
Sometimes, but it is not always as simple as melting the two metals together.

14-karat and 18-karat gold contain different proportions of pure gold and other alloy metals. If they are melted together, the resulting karat and color may not be predictable, and the finished metal may not have the ideal properties for the new piece.

Our goldsmiths will evaluate the metal and determine the best approach. Depending on the project, we may:

-Keep different karat golds separate within the design
-Use the existing metal where it is most appropriate
-Add new gold to achieve the necessary strength and consistency
-Refine or credit some of the old gold rather than melting it directly into the new piece

Is it better to reset an existing diamond or buy a new one?
If an existing diamond is in good condition, reusing it often makes excellent sense—especially if it has meaningful family history or significant size and value.

However, very small stones may not always be economical to reset. The labor involved in removing and resetting a stone can sometimes add more to the project than the stone itself is worth.

Our team will explain whether resetting the stone is practical and appropriate for the new design.

Will I receive a CAD rendering or wax model?
Often, yes. After the initial consultation and preliminary design discussions, we frequently provide computer-aided design renderings, commonly called CADs, or realistic images that allow you to preview the piece before production.

CAD renderings can help you:

-See the proportions and overall appearance
-Review the design from multiple angles
-Make changes before production begins
-Confirm details such as stone placement, metal, and dimensions

A wax model may also be created upon request when it would be helpful to evaluate the size, shape, or fit of the design in three dimensions.

There is no separate charge for CAD renderings or wax models. Any required deposit is applied to the final cost of the project.

How many design revisions are included?
Our goal is to make sure you are comfortable and confident with the design before production begins. We will work through the revisions needed to achieve the right result.

For more extensive design projects, a non-refundable deposit may be required before CAD renderings or wax models are prepared. That deposit is applied to the final cost of the project if you proceed.

When is a deposit required?
A deposit is not required at the time of an initial consultation.

A deposit is generally required before we begin preparing CAD renderings or wax models. This helps cover the design and development work involved while keeping the process collaborative and flexible.

Deposits are applied to the final cost of the project. If the project does not move forward, the deposit is typically non-refundable because it covers work already completed.

What happens to unused stones or metal?
If some of your original stones or metal are not used in the finished design, you may generally choose to have them returned or trade them as scrap toward the project.

We will discuss these options with you during the design and estimate process so you understand how the materials will be handled and how they may affect the final cost.

Can I create a custom engagement ring?
Absolutely. Custom engagement rings are one of our specialties.

The process typically includes:
