Here are some common questions we get regarding jewelry care during the summer months.
Can I swim with my jewelry on?
It’s best not to. If at all possible, take your jewelry off before you go into a pool, hot tub, or the ocean.
Chlorine, for example, can discolor white gold jewelry. If that happens, we are able to rhodium plate your jewelry, bringing back its brilliant white color.
In the ocean, salt water can be corrosive for your jewelry. Over time it can wear down your prongs to the point where they snap off or break more easily.
Sometimes spending time in the water can also contract your finger, making it easier for rings to slip off.
Finally, while you’re out in the sun, chances are you are applying sun screen. Those lotions can get stuck in your chains, rings, and bracelets, leaving a film that makes them look dull and dingy.
Remember, take your jewelry off at home, before you even get to the beach or the pool. You don’t want to leave them unprotected in public.
Can I golf, play tennis, or exercise with my jewelry on?
It’s best to take off your jewelry before you take part in any type of exercise or sports.
Gripping weights, golf clubs, or tennis rackets can damage your jewelry. Metals are malleable. That’s how we make your jewelry in the first place! With enough pressure you can disfigure rings easier than you may think.
It is also very easy to snap a prong, potentially meaning you lose a stone, while exercising or taking part in a sport. Slight contact which you may not even notice can do the trick.
Even sweat alone is bad for your jewelry. It can accelerate the tarnishing process for sterling silver, for example.
Get Your Jewelry Checked
We recommend that you often have your jewelry inspected for damage. Rings in particular should be checked every few months. Remember, a quick hit to a ring that you don’t even notice can cause prong damage.
